The Open Translation Project

Two years ago, Autodesk embraced Open Learning by releasing our learning resources with Creative Commons licensing. The Open Translation project takes this to the next level by allowing anyone to help translate video learning materials to additional languages.

This project was developed by Judy Bayne from Autodesk's Media and Entertainment group. Judy participated in Autodesk's Idea Exploration Innovation Workshop, a program run by the Research team to help employees bring their great ideas to life.

As a passionate educator, Judy says it's critical that our world-wide vision for learning requires that we reach out in many languages. To help with this, we’ve partnered with Amara, a collaborative translation platform, to add subtitles to videos.

Autodesk Open TranslationUsers can add subtitles to videos and collaborate to improve each other's translations.

We would love if you take a look at the results or, even better, try the open translation project yourself

Get Your Bot On! is a 3-day robotics hackathon where participants imagine, design and prototype their robot ideas. Over 130 makers will imagine and develop robots within the theme Healthy:

  • Healthy People
  • Healthy Homes
  • Healthy Schools
  • Healthy Workplaces
  • Healthy Environment
  • Healthy Play

There are only 5 rules for all robots that will be built:

  • the robot must move in some way
  • the robot must use a microcontroller
  • the robot must be able to sense something in its environment or receive input
  • the robot must be demonstrated on the final day of the hackathon
  • the robot must in some way relate to the theme of “Healthy”

If you sign up, there's a lot of cool stuff in the participant kit including an arduino, motors, switches and LED's. Winning designs will incorporate:

  • Design for Human Interaction – This is the “How delightful!” and ” What a beautiful robot!” prize
  • Innovation (the most novel or compelling concept) – This is the “What Genius!” and “How come I didn’t think of that!” prize
  • Technical Excellent – This is the “How did you do that?!” and ” Robots will bow down to you.” prize

And Dr. Gordon Kurtenbach will be on the judging panel!
